Laser Tattoo removal of colours

Whilst successful tattoo removal is largely dependent on the laser used, other factors that affect the results include, the skill and experience of the operator, the condition and reaction of your skin and immune system and of course the colours of the tattoo.

At The Fadeaway Clinic I have a Q switched NDYAG tattoo removal lasers considered the industry gold standard for tattoo removal.

Types of tattoo removal lasers at FadeAway

There is published research that Q switched NDYAG tattoo removal lasers are the safest and most effective lasers available for tattoo removal. They have the best results whilst causing the least damage to surrounding tissue.

Some colours are difficult due to the fact that there are so many different shades of a colour and because they may have been made up from different inks. This makes the removal of coloured tattoos usually more complex. As a general rule, the lighter the colour the more difficult it becomes to treat, so colours such as turquoise or yellow are difficult.· Turquoise responds variably, depending on the pigments in the ink. Yellow tends to reflect light and is difficult to treat.

The ND YAG Lasers that we use emits two different wavelength frequencies

  • 1064 – an infrared wavelength well absorbed by black and dark blue tattoos
  • 532 – a visible green light well absorbed by red and orange that can satisfactorily be used for black, dark blue and purple ink.

Which Tattoo colours respond to each Laser Wavelength?

  • Black tattoos are the easiest to remove and most black tattoos can be faded down or completely removed with the correct number of sessions. This is because black ink absorbs all wavelengths of light
  • Red – is absorbed best by green light so we use our 532
  • Orange is absorbed best by green light so we use our 532
  • Purple is absorbed best by green light so we use our 532
  • Dark blue can be absorbed by either infrared or green light so we primarily use our 1064
  • Greens and blues are best absorbed by the red light of a ruby laser which I don’t have, as research suggests that can have poor results and are more damaging to the surrounding skin, however depending on the hues of the colours and how they are made up they can sometimes be treated satisfactorily by either the 1064 or 532 wavelengths (but we always advise customers that results may be variable)
  • Pastel colours and light blues, yellows and white are the most difficult pigments to fadedown or remove as they tend to reflect the laser light and I always advise customers that these colours may be untreatable, although as they often make up part of a larger tattoo many people find that once the surrounding colours have been removed, that they are happy with the results either for a cover up or that the tattoo itself is not that visible.
  • For pastel colours, light blues and yellows I can sometimes try to treat with the wavelengths that I have and some tattoos are responsive due to how the ink has been made up but results are never guaranteed.

What is Tattoo Carbonisation?

Carbonisation – some colours especially lighter colours have a chance of becoming darker when lasered. This is due to ingredients in certain ink colours carbonising. This darkening sometimes affects colours such as white, pink, fluorescent and also lighter brown colours and red.
